Early Afternoon Paintings
To me, early afternoon means deep calm, nearly immobility. In Mediterranean countries, many people go and have a little nap at that time of the day, shops and offices and offices reopening quite late in the afternoon. When you walk through the Spanish towns at this time, they do seem dead! And in other places, if I remember well from my time in Germany when I was working in a company and in the university, early afternoon was the time to go back to work after midday lunch. Certainly not a time of big efforts and great productivity!
To translate this atmosphere in paintings is probably quite arbitrary. I choose to focus on the calm aspect, featuring “freeze-frame landscapes”, under a still intense light, without too many contrasts. The watercolour and the gouache techniques are very suitable to reach these effects.
