To paint or draw a portrait, generally, is not easy. But a child portrait is even worse, at least for me! Perhaps because I never had children myself and not really had the occasion to watch them for a long time?
One of the reasons is certainly that the proportions of a child’s face are very different: the younger the child is, the more they differ. Another factor which makes this task difficult is the skin of a child: it is smooth, has no wrinkles or deformations (acquired in a long life) which help to show the character of the subject. But on the other side, the younger a child is, the less his “real face” is hidden behind social and psychological masks, which of course makes it easier to understand a child’s face.
But the biggest problem might be that most of my children’s portraits are done on commission. Parents are very difficult to satisfy, considering that their children, of course, are the most beautiful in the world. This forces the artist to hide or at least retouch certain not too cute features and asymmetries, with the result that the child is unrecognisable on the portrait! When I do a child portrait, -in fact any kind of portrait- I try to make a compromise, to hide the ugly parts a little bit, but in a way that one does not really notice that I have hidden them. A good way to do this is to slightly emphasize the beautiful parts of a face: with goodwill one can always find some. Then the eyes of the people looking at the portraits automatically focus on these parts, and everybody is happy!
Some of my children portraits, and many others, are available directly online as Giclee print in many different dimensions, on paper, canvas or metal, and also as greeting cards.
