Caricatures

Caricatures

I don’t really like caricatures. I find that caricaturists often exaggerate much too much, simply focussing on the ugly features of people. I don’t find them even funny, and however well they are artistically and/or technically done, I just find them ugly. For me it is a deep lack of respect for the caricatured person, and more generally a lack of love for the human condition.
Having said that, I do like a tender and funny caricature. The kind where weaknesses and defects are looked at with a generous eye, and then drawn with kindness and humour, without ugliness and monstrosity.
My own caricatures are not really caricatures, at least not by intent. They all are the result of sketches done on site, most of the time at cafés. But I don’t know why, they always end up looking like caricatures. Perhaps because my subjects are moving, perhaps because I don’t want them to see me drawing them, and consequently I have to be very fast and automatically amplify the main features of faces and body attitudes? Probably…
Unfortunately I don’t believe that I fulfil my own criteria of kind and tender caricatures. But at least they are not really ugly, and perhaps they will make you smile?

My caricature portraits, and many others, are available directly online as Giclee print in many different dimensions, on paper, canvas or metal, and also as greeting cards.
