I have just returned (March 2013) from a painting trip to Tenerife, the largest and most populated island of the seven Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1200 km from the Iberian Peninsula. I had already been there a long time ago,in November 1998, arriving with my brother from the sea that time. He was on a sailing trip around the world and I was with him for a little part of the trip. We had arrived from Gibraltar after a very perilous crossing which we miraculously survived… but that is another story. My memories of the island were great though, and I was glad to go back there, about 15 years later.
These last 3 weeks spent in Tenerife have been a rich and exciting experience, although very different from what I experienced in Lanzarote in November 2012. I cannot believe how different Lanzarote and Tenerife are, almost polar opposites! As an artist loving colours, I was of course especially enthusiastic about all the multicoloured houses everywhere. Beautiful vivid or pastel, often unusual colours. Kind of Caribbean I would say…
Generally the landscapes were spectacular, both in the centre of the island -especially the volcanic Teide National Park-, and on the coast.
In any case there were many attractive motifs for me as an artist. Unfortunately I had rare occasions to sketch the people from there, only a few appear sometimes in the background of my paintings, as vague silhouettes.
But I hope that generally, I am rendering the island with this collection of travel sketches and paintings. Only the people who live there and those who love that island can say!
These paintings of Tenerife are available directly online as Giclee print in many different dimensions, on paper, canvas or metal, and also as greeting cards.
